Chen Wei 1990

Chen Wei was born in 1990 in Jiangxi, China. He graduated from Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute with a BA in Ceramic Art in 2011, and from Fine Arts College of Shanghai University with a MA in Material Art in 2014. He currently lives and works in Shanghai. His artistic practices are based on individual experience with a focus on the quotidian dilemma of the contemporary society. His works present a literary spatial experience through the construction of polyphonic structures like ceramics, architectures, gestures, and sounds, which provoke philosophical thoughts about “existence” and “reality”. His solo exhibitions include: MAME (FU|KAN, Shanghai, 2020). Group exhibitions include: \exit (AIKE, Shanghai, 2023), Aisle (Dangxia Art Space, Beijing, 2023), I want to draw windows all over the ground (OCAT Shenzhen, Shenzhen, 2022), The Boundary of Porcelain-A Ceramics Experimental Field for the Young (Longquan Celadon Exhibition Center, Longquan, 2020), Space/Reflection-Condo Shanghai (A+ Contemporary, Shanghai, 2019), Exchange Value (BANK/Mabsociety, Shanghai, 2019). Recent artist-in-residence programs include: GlogauAIR Artist Residency (Berlin, 2017); Swatch Art Peace Hotel Artist Residency (Shanghai, 2016); Red Gate Residency (Beijing,2015); IGAV Istituto Garuzzo per le Arti Visive (Milan, 2014); Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts (Newcastle, 2013); Visva-Bharati University Ceramic Studio (Calcutta, 2013). Recent awards include: SAYA Embrace Projcet Annual Award (2017); The Shanghai Award-Italian and Chinese Emerging Artist (2014); M50 Creative New Artist Award-the ShanghART Gallery Award (2013).
